IVF and Fertility Care FAQs

When should I see a fertility specialist
We recommend seeking the support of a fertility specialist if you’ve been trying to conceive for 12 months without success (or after 6 months if you’re over 35). You should also consider seeing a specialist if you have irregular periods, a known reproductive health condition (such as PCOS or endometriosis), or if you or your partner have a history of fertility issues. Same-sex couples and single individuals who are planning to start a family can also benefit from an initial fertility consultation.
What tests can be done to check fertility
Fertility testing may involve a combination of blood tests, ultrasounds, and semen analysis. For people with ovaries, tests often check hormone levels, ovarian reserve (egg supply), and whether ovulation is occurring regularly. For people with sperm, a semen analysis assesses sperm count, shape and movement. Additional tests, like checking the fallopian tubes, may also be recommended.
Can same-sex couples or single parents access fertility treatments?
Absolutely. Bronwyn is proud to offer inclusive fertility care for same-sex couples, transgender individuals and single parents. Options include donor sperm, donor eggs, reciprocal IVF (for lesbian couples), and fertility preservation for trans and gender-diverse patients. Every patient’s journey is unique, and Dr Devine will work with you to create a treatment plan that reflects your goals and circumstances.
Does Medicare cover fertility treatments in Australia
Yes, Medicare covers certain fertility treatments in Australia, but rebates vary depending on the type of treatment and whether you have a valid referral from your GP or specialist.
What is the difference between iui and ivf?
The key difference between IUI and IVF is where the process of fertilisation takes place. IUI takes place inside the uterus, relying on natural fertilisation for the egg and sperm to meet on their own. IVF happens outside of the uterus in a controlled laboratory with more intervention.
How is IVF different from ICSI?
ICSI involves injecting a single sperm into a single mature egg. Standard IVF involves adding many sperm to a dish containing the eggs. The sperm and eggs are left for a period of time to allow sperm to penetrate the egg naturally. ICSI is recommended for couples with fertility challenges due to male factors or those where standard IVF has been unsuccessful.
Aveta Obstetrics and Gynaecology is focussed on providing a caring, honest and professional approach to your health.
