YOUR FIRST VISIT

Your First Obstetric Visit

Many people are anxious leading up to their first obstetric appointment, however we are very keen to make sure you have all the time you need to discuss any health issues or other matters that are concerning you.  Bronwyn will welcome you in (if you are partnered, it is great if your partner can come along, but if that is not possible at the first visit there will be plenty of opportunities for partner involvement at all or any other visits) and make you feel comfortable.  She’ll establish your due date and take a history about your pregnancy so far and your general and gynaecological health.  You will have an ultrasound to confirm your dates and pregnancy progress then she’ll chat with you about investigations and tests you’ll require before your next appointment.  Right throughout you’ll have the chance to ask any questions or discuss anything you need. You’ll then book your upcoming appointments and how to get in touch if there are any issues in the interim.

Things you will need to bring to your first visit:

✓  You will need a valid referral from a doctor if you want to be able to claim a Medicare rebate for your visit. Referrals from one specialist to another are only valid for 3 months. In contrast, referrals from a GP to a specialist are valid for 12 months. Therefore, it would be very helpful to obtain a referral from a GP to cover your entire pregnancy, even if you have been referred by a specialist.

✓  A completed Personal Information and Consent Form, which you would have received in your information pack after you booked your appointment.

✓  A completed Medical History form, which was also included in the information pack you received.

✓  Your Medicare card and private health insurance details

✓  Details & results of any testing you have had so far in the pregnancy

Subsequent Visits
Bronwyn will normally see you about once per month to 28 weeks if your pregnancy progresses smoothly, then fortnightly to 36 weeks and weekly after that until your birth. However, if there is any reason to see you more frequently, that can easily be arranged.

Postnatal Visit
When your baby is about six weeks of age, you usually see your paediatrician or GP for a baby check-up and vaccinations and see your obstetrician for a postnatal review. It is fantastic if you can bring your baby or babies to the postnatal appointment. Bronwyn would love to see them. We understand if it’s easier to pop out of the house and leave your baby with your partner or a carer, though, particularly if it is sleep time!

At the postnatal visit, we confirm that all is going well. Then, we arrange your routine cervical screen if you are due for it, discuss contraception if required, and advise your return to exercise. If you need any more postnatal appointments or need to see Bronwyn before the six-week check-up, that is always possible to arrange as well.
